What you should be able to do by the time we’re finished: 

  1. Do a close reading of text to determine
    1. What an author is saying.
    2. What an author means.
    3. How the author’s choice of structures, techniques and words maximizes meaning and effect.
       
  1. Analyze a visual image to determine what the artist ‘means’ and say how the artist has manipulated visual elements to enhance meaning and effect.
     
  1. Annotate a text or image in a way that enhances your understanding of the text or image, depending on your purpose.
     
  1. Write a strong, coherent thesis statement.
     
  1. Write strong, clear sentences and paragraphs.
     
  1. Structure an essay around a particular purpose.
     
  1. Incorporate quotes into an essay.
     
  1. Cite sources correctly.
     
  1. Write an argument -- defend a position -- using 2-3 sources as support.
     
  1. Identify some of the more common word roots and affixes.
