What you should be able to do by the time
we’re finished:
- Do a close reading of text to determine
- What an author is saying.
- What an author means.
- How the author’s choice of structures, techniques
and words maximizes meaning and effect.
- Analyze a visual image to determine what the artist
‘means’ and say how the artist has manipulated visual elements to enhance
meaning and effect.
- Annotate a text or image in a way that enhances your
understanding of the text or image, depending on your purpose.
- Write a strong, coherent thesis statement.
- Write strong, clear sentences and paragraphs.
- Structure an essay around a particular purpose.
- Incorporate quotes into an essay.
- Cite sources correctly.
- Write an argument -- defend a position -- using 2-3
sources as support.
- Identify some of the more common word roots and
affixes.
